Rachel Allen"What a great site! I love it! I think changing the public perception of breastfeeding to show mums they can stay stylish and still breastfeed is much needed to fill a support void in Ireland. Culturally it is our public perception which holds so many people back. |

Domini Kemp “No chef, food company or scientist can make food as perfect for your baby, as you can. Yes, breastfeeding takes time, but the results are worth it. Your baby’s health is undoubtedly improved and it’s great for getting you back in shape. |

I had always planned to breastfeed as my Mum had breastfed all of us, as had my husband’s mother. Most of my friends had also breastfed. Despite all of the support, and baby latching on right from birth, I found it extremely difficult at the beginning. I had a lot of pain when breastfeeding for several weeks, and then developed thrush. However, apart from momentary lapses when feeds were very painful at the beginning, I never planned on switching to bottle.
For me breastfeeding was so obviously the best for baby and for me. After about four weeks, things became much easier ,thanks to a lactation consultant, who showed me how to relax when feeding and let baby lead, and a really good PHN who thankfully had breastfed herself. From then on things were great, I loved breastfeeding because of the closeness, knowing it was really good for my daughter, and the convenience when out and about! There were some challenges along the way when she was fussy or teething, but otherwise I loved every minute. I weaned her off the breast at 7 months due to returning to work and found the transition difficult emotionally. I took some evening primrose oil and vitamin B which helped with my mood. I am already excited about the possibility of breastfeeding again if I am blessed with another baby, and I’m hoping to do it for even longer next time. For me the most important things that helped me continue in the early weeks were a supportive partner, friends I could call for advice and support, and breastfeeding support groups, as well as online support. Breastfeeding can be challenging at the beginning, so its important to surround yourself with people who will support your decision to breastfeed…. |
