"What a great site! I love it! I think changing the public perception of breastfeeding to show mums they can stay stylish and still breastfeed is much needed to fill a support void in Ireland. Culturally it is our public perception which holds so many people back.

HEALTH Minister Aaron Motsoaledi has ignited furious debate after his suggestion this week that baby formula should be banned – worldwide.

Although such calls from some quarters are not new, it is the first time such a senior member of the South African government has publicly argued for the banning of infant formula.

Motsoaledi’s controversial remarks in Cape Town found partial favour with breast feeding enthusiasts, but many people felt he overstepped the mark by likening baby formula to skin lightening cream.

Yesterday, a Dispatch website forum blazed with furious comments from people, who mostly said mothers had the right to decide whether to breast feed or use formula.

“I don’t think a man can comment about something he will never have to experience,” said East London mom Melanie Loxton, who bottle fed her second child.

Although breast feeding is recommended by the World Health Organisation for at least the first six months of a child’s life, there are many instances where mothers are forced to use formula.

East London medical experts who were polled agreed that breast milk was the healthier choice.

But they defended the use of infant formula, saying that in many instances it was the only alternative.

Paediatrician Frederich Pohl said that he understood where the minister was coming from but warned that further research was needed.

“There are exceptions, for instance: mothers who have had breast reductions, suffered trauma or had surgery to the breast area, they may not be able to breast feed. We also advise mothers who are HIV-positive not to breast feed as they risk infecting their children. Ideally, we would prefer women to breast feed but we do not live in an ideal world,” Pohl said.

Claire Smith, a midwife for the past 25 years, said formula had its place. “Some children are lactose intolerant in which case they need to be put on a lactose-free formula.”

In his address at the launch of a Human Sciences Research Council report on children and HIV, Motsoaledi argued that while working as a doctor, he attended to women who sought the slightest excuse not to breast feed.

However, Dr Richards Makomba, a private practising paediatrician in East London, said in his experience the “majority of mothers who use formula do not use it because it is convenient – they use it because they are working or have a medical condition ”.

Either way, enraged mothers said they should have a choice. Anna Suter, who is pregnant with her second child, said: “The minister is encroaching on our individual rights. Mothers who work are put under pressure and cannot produce milk on demand.”

Motsoaledi said he would propose a worldwide ban of infant formula in Switzerland at the World Health Assembly next week. D octors doubted that such a ban would be passed.

Dr Lesley Ann Foster, executive director of Masimanyane Women’s Support Centre, said: “A ban will affect all mothers .... But, I don’t think a ban will happen – it’s not practical.” - By LOIS MOODLE
